What is a director?
The position of a film director is not easy. Everybody has a different
opinion on what exactly the director’s job entails. However, there are the
basics which every director does.
What does a director do?
Basic jobs
- Interpreting the script and building it into a film. This includes planning locations, shots, pacing, acting styles and anything else that can dramatically change the movie.
- Overseeing technical aspects.
- Coaching the cast and directing them towards where they should be.
- Coordinating staff and making sure everything meets requirements and the deadline is met.
So they're like a producer?
People often confuse
the director with the producer, this is understandable as they are both seen as
the ‘bosses’ of the film and they do share certain jobs. However, the producer
is responsible for overseeing the entire film including finance and budgets,
hiring staff etc. The director is usually in charge of the more creative
aspects, but is hired by and answers to the producer.
Required skills.
In order to be a
director you must have a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of film. It
goes without saying that this is a senior position and a lot of experience is
needed to take on such responsibility.
